First Favorite Chinese Photographer: Cao Fei

A few days ago I was scanning art books at my local Barnes and Noble. In a heavy text collection of 100 contemporary artists I found a female chinese photographer named Cao Fei. Her work deals with the current youth culture of China. How teenagers and young adults are immersed in a culture where tech and electronic media are translated into their everyday lives.

Personally I am not a practitioner of cosplay, but Cao has revealed to me that it is a backlash towards the traditionalism of their parents generation. Japanese anime has created a visible alternate identity for chinese youth. Her work is not just cosplay observation. Other youth themes are social coping, generational growth, and other analysis of media like film and music. I copied some of her photography work from Cos-play, Storage Box, and Fresh series.
